About the Program
The Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) is an ACGME-approved program. Two fellowships are available each year.
Between the Duke Sleep Disorders Center in Durham, North Carolina, and the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) Sleep Disorders Center, there are many subspecialty sleep disorders clinics. This includes a general sleep disorders clinic, sleep apnea clinic, insomnia clinic, and pediatric sleep clinic at DUMC.
Additionally, a CPAP compliance clinic is available at the Durham VAMC, as are narcolepsy, REM sleep behavior disorder, and RLS/PLMS clinics. Fellows rotate in all these clinics to obtain a broad based training in sleep medicine.
Clinicians from neurology, psychiatry, psychology, pulmonary, pediatric pulmonary, pediatric neurology, otolaryngology, and nursing participate in the training of sleep medicine fellows.
Sleep medicine fellows also have exposure to EEG and EP studies, and by the conclusion of their fellowship are proficient in reading EEGs and EPs. A rotation in the epilepsy lab provides education on the interaction of sleep and epilepsy and allows fellows to learn the basics of epilepsy management.
The faculty of the Duke Sleep Disoders Center is internationally recognized as leaders in the field and participates in clinical research. Several faculty members have NIH and industry-funded research. Fellows are encouraged to participate in ongoing research projects or develop ones of their own.
There are numerous conferences during the week. Didactic sleep and clinical neurophysiology conferences are held every week. A case conference to discuss difficult sleep medicine patients, a journal club, and a special pediatric sleep conference are all held every week.
The sleep medicine fellows also work one-on-one with sleep technologists to learn about scoring sleep studies.
