About the Program
The Duke Neurocritical Care Fellowship trains academic-minded neurointensivists with an emphasis on superb clinical training and future career planning, with options for 12 and 24-month fellowships. Both options are accredited through the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties. The 24-month program accepts two fellows per year. The 12-month program accepts one fellow per year. The 12-month program is intended for those who have completed neurosurgery residency or post-graduate fellowship training in anesthesia critical care, surgical critical care, or internal medicine critical care.
All our fellows work with a team of nine neurointensivists from the Departments of Neurology and Anesthesiology. A unique aspect of our fellowship is the diverse skillsets of our various attendings. In addition to having completed fellowships in neurocritical care, three of our attendings have completed fellowships in clinical neurophysiology, two completed fellowships in vascular neurology, two are also trained in anesthesiology, and two run basic science labs. Several of our faculty members also have positions at the Duke Clinical Research Institute.
Additionally, a team of neurology and neurosurgery residents and 12 critical care nurse practitioners staff the Neuroscience ICU 24 hours a day. Duke has outstanding neurosurgeons and neurointerventionalists with large caseloads. The Neurosurgery Department, which includes 25 clinical neurosurgeons, performed 4,518 surgical cases in 2017.
Duke University Hospital is an internationally known tertiary- and quaternary-care medical center with 957 inpatient beds and 51 operating rooms. Duke is a Level-1 trauma center and comprehensive stroke center. U.S. News & World Report named Duke University Hospital as the 2017 "Best Regionally Ranked Hospital," ranked first in the state of North Carolina.
In 2020 the NeuroICU moved to the the newly opened state of the art Duke Central Tower. Our team works closely with faculty from the Department of Neurosurgery but is responsible for the primary care of all patients in the Neuro ICU. The fellowship fosters the transition to attending-level supervisory duties while providing “hands-on” critical care experience. Fellows spend most of their time in the Neuro ICU, but also complete rotations several off-service rotations and electives. Outside the unit, fellows have 25% of their time protected to develop research projects of their choice, under the direction of a research mentor.
