Research

Our Department's Enhui Pan, MD and Ram Puranam, PhD conduct epilepsy research in the McNamara lab of the Neurobiology Department.

This laboratory examines the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying epileptogenesis, the process by which a normal brain becomes epileptic. Insight into these mechanisms can provide targets for preventive and/or disease modifying therapies for this common and commonly devastating brain disorder. The epilepsies constitute a group of common, serious neurological disorders, among which temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most prevalent and devastating.
