Careers in Neurology and Neuroscience Day, Another Mass Shooting

A Spector 200

Hello everyone. Here is your D&I Update for January 2023. The big news that I’m very excited to share with you is that we have received a gift from Harmony Biosciences to sponsor our Careers in Neurology and Neuroscience Day for NCCU students!

Representatives from Neurology, Neurobiology, and Neurosurgery are working to put on this event. We have reserved space at the JB Duke Hotel on April 29, 2023. Please save the date! We will need volunteers who can speak on a variety of topics (e.g. applying to med school, life as a resident, what does a neurologist do, what types of research careers are available, what is grad school like, and more).

We will also be hosting mock interviews to allow students to practice interview skills, and we will be doing CV reviews to provide feedback. There will be a mentor speed dating event where research teams can meet potential undergrads to work in their labs. Once the schedule is finalized, I’ll post a sign-up so that you can volunteer for one or more of these events. The average time commitment per person is estimated to be about an hour. An honorarium will be paid to those who participate.

Our next D&I lecture will be February 15, featuring Dr. Nimish Mohile from the University of Rochester providing an update on the AAN’s actions to fight racism in Neurology.

I often wonder if it’ll ever be possible for me to send out a monthly email where I don’t have to address another horrific murder. With this email, it’s not a matter of if, its which one. Do we focus on how deplorable workplace conditions in California led to a massacre? Shooting up a dance hall filled with Asian Americans? Or the mind-blowing evil of 5 police officers beating a Black man to death? I can’t begin to address all of these horrors in this email. I will say that each event like this takes a toll on the psyches of members from these targeted populations and on all of us. If you are struggling with these events and want to talk, I’m here to listen.
