Headache and Pain
Chronic or recurring headaches and head pain cause pain and other devastating effects on quality of life and day-to-day living. The Duke Neurology Headache division is dedicated to helping patients find relief from both of these areas.
Our providers have experience caring for both common and complex headache disorders, with nationally recognized expertise in treating vertigo, chronic migraine, and neurologic causes of head pain. We work closely with other providers trained in neurosurgery, psychology and pain management to provide our patients with comprehensive, tailored care.
Our physicians diagnosis and treat common headache disorders including migraine and tension headache, and also have experience in less common head pain conditions including trigeminal neuralgia, atypical face pain, post-concussion headache, and headache due to other diseases.
We offer traditional medical therapies for headaches, as well as interventional treatments including triggerpoint injections, nerve blocks, and Botox injections. Our clinic also offers IV therapy for several types of headache pain.
In addition to our physician faculty, the clinic nursing staff have a dedicated phone line for assisting patients with questions regarding medications, treatment plans, and helping with medication authorizations with insurance companies.
Education and Training
Our division offers a variety of educational opportunities within the Duke Pain and Palliative Care Clinic. All residents gain exposure to the evaluation and treatment of pain during inpatient and outpatient experiences.
The Duke Department of Neurology is seeking candidates for a headache fellowship starting in the latter half of 2016. Candidates should be board-eligible or certified physicians who are interested in headache and head pain. Read more about the program here.
