Chief Resident Spotlight: Rahul Gaini, MD, MBA

As the academic year comes to a close, we're highlighting our chief residents and exiting fellows as they embark on the next phases of their careers. Our first chief resident to be featured is Rahul Gaini, MD, MBA.

Dr. Gaini came to Duke after completing his medical training at The University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine. From establishing a podcast to buying a house, Dr. Gaini has experienced several milestones over the last four years and looks forward to more as he stays in Durham for fellowship.

What are your plans once you complete your final year of residency?

Pursuing a Neuromuscular Medicine/EMG Fellowship at the Duke University School of Medicine.

How have you changed or grown since joining Duke Neurology for residency?

I have grown immensely since joining Duke Neurology. I've had the opportunity to learn from peers and mentors both professionally and personally. It's been a tremendous experience!

What is a favorite memory from your time with Duke Neurology?

There are too many to list. From weddings to pickle ball tournaments to resident hang outs to rewarding patient care. The first one that popped into my head was starting a podcast series with my co-resident and discovering a free podcast studio at a bar downtown (Queeny's).

What advice would you give to those following in your footsteps?

Recognize residency as a training program more so than a performance program. We all learn at different paces, and the goal is to get you to independent practice by the END of residency. Comparison is the thief of joy, and your goal should be to be better than you were yesterday.

What most excites you for the next chapter as a Neuromuscular Medicine Fellow?

Gaining a better understanding of EMG/NCS procedures to incorporate into my future career!

Are there any personal highlights you'd like to note from your time with Duke Neurology?

My wife and I bought a new house during my PGY-3 year and have loved it.

Any shout-outs you'd like to give for friends, family, mentors, educators, etc.?

Too many to count, though I bet they know who they are - I will most definitely be reaching out individually as we get closer to graduation :)
