Neuro, Neuro-opthamology, and Concussion Videos

Mindfulness and Yoga Training for Athletes with Concussion (MYTAC)

This 22-minute video demonstrates a mindfulness and yoga training session geared towards individuals who have suffered a concussion. Although it was developed as part of a study to examine athletes' recovery from concussion, it is available and open to everyone.

Neurology Examination Training Videos

The neurologic examination, sports concussion exam, and the neuro-ophthalmology or eye exam are powerful tools for evaluating health and assessing injuries and complaints. However, these tests must be performed consistently, correctly, and effectively to provide accurate results.

To that end, Duke Professor of Neurology Joel Morgenlander, MD, FAAN, and clinical experts within the Departments of Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Orthopaedic Surgery, and the Duke Sports Concussion Clinic, have created a series of video-based lessons to help non-neurology providers give each of these three exams.

For each exam, Duke Neurology faculty discuss key components of the exam, explain why they are important, and demonstrate how to perform them correctly. Each exam is broken into different chapters that discuss different aspects of the examination or specific health concerns.

All of these videos are available to watch below, or on our YouTube channel.

Neurology Exam

Duke Professor of Neurology Joel Morgenlander, MD, and Jessica McFarlin, MD, demonstrate how to give a neurological examination, including how to assess mental status, cranial nerves, motor function, senses, and reflexes.

Neuro-Ophthalmological Eye Exam

M. Tariq Bhatti, MD, Duke Professor of Neurology and Ophthalmology, and Jacqueline Dzau, MD, demonstrate the components of the core ophthalmologic examination in a 12-part video series meant for non-ophthalmologists. Each video discusses and demonstrates an important topic, including anatomy, history, initial testing, the physical exam, and abnormal findings.

Clinical Evaluation of the Athlete with Concussion

In this nine-part video series geared toward providers working with athletes, Duke faculty discuss and demonstrate the sports concussion exam. Each video discusses an integral part of assessing concussion, from symptom checklists to the balanced error scoring system, to the King-Devick test.

These lessons are led by Morgelander, as well as Co-directors of the Duke Sports Neurology Clinic, Jeffrey Bytomski, DO, FAOASM, and Corina Martinez, PT, DPT, and Lesli Morcom, MSN, and Holly O’Sullivan, PA-C, MS.

These videos were made possible with the aid of a Duke GME innovation grant. Joel Morgenlander, MD, served as principal investigator. Content was organized and created by Morgenlander, Bhatti, Dzau, Bytomski, and Martinez.
